- 사회적으로 구성된 편견과 차별 : 아일랜드 이주여성 메리 맬런 사례 -
편견과 차별의 문제는 다문화교육 주제로 중요하게 다뤄지고 있다. 본 논문은 특정집단에 대한 편견이 정치적 권력구조의 변화에 따라 달라진다는 것을 확인하고, 편견이 그 집단에 속한 개인에게 폭력적 차별로 재현되는 조건을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 사회적으로 구성되는 편견과 차별에 대한 논의를 정리하고 다중차별개념을 소개한다. 그리고 1900년대 초반 미국 사회의 아일랜드인에 대한 편견을 소개한 후, 다중차별요인을 지닌 아일랜드 이주여성이었던 메리 맬런에게 가해진 차별 사례를 제시한다. 연구 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 19세기 중반 이후 아일랜드인에 대한 미국 사회의 부정적인 편견은 영국의 식민 지배를 받아 유럽에서 가장 빈곤했던 아일랜드의 당시 정치·경제적 상황과 관련하여 사회적으로 구성되었다. 현재 아일랜드계 미국인의 정치적·경제적 영향력이 커졌기 때문에 아일랜드인에 대한 부정적편견은 상당 부분 사라졌다. 둘째, 전염병 유행과 같은 특수한 상황에서 특정 집단에대한 편견은 그 집단에 속한 개인에 대한 극단적 차별로 표출된다. 그 희생자는 다중차별요인을 가진 사람일 확률이 높다.
Socially Constructed Prejudice and Discrimination : The Case of Mary Mallon
Prejudice and discrimination have been major topics in the study of multi-cultural education. This article aims to show that prejudice on a specific group changes according to the changes in the political power structure and examine the condition in which prejudice is re-generated as violent discrimination on the individuals who belong to the group. It first discusses the social construction of prejudice and discrimination and introduces the concept of multiple discrimination. It then provides an overview of the American prejudice on Irish people in the early 1900s and explain the case of discrimination on Mary Melon, an Irish migrant woman who had the sources for multiple discrimination. It concludes as follows. First, the negative prejudice on Irish people in American society had been socially constructed in the context of political economic situation of Ireland. Today, the negative prejudice on Irish people in America has largely disappeared as political and economic influence of Irish people has increased. Second, In the plague situation, prejudice on a specific group emerges as an extremely strong discrimination on an individual who belongs to the group. The victim is mostly the one who has sources for multiple discrimination.
