- ‘프로그램 노트’ 분석을 통한 클래식 음악의 교육적 전파 :파리의 미국인(An American in Paris)을 중심으로 -
<파리의 미국인 An American in Paris>은 조지 거슈윈(George Gershwin, 1898-1937)의 파리 방문 경험에 기초하여 탄생한 교향시다. 작품의 초연 당시 소개된 ‘프로그램 노트’(Program Note)는 그의 친구이자 음악 평론가였던 딤스 테일러(Deems Taylor, 1885-1966)가 거슈윈의 생각에 기초하여 작성한 글(Narrative Guide)로서 청 중이 쉽게 작품에 접근할 수 있도록 음악 진행 순서에 따라 이야기를 추가한 것이 특징 이다. 본 연구에서는 문헌 연구, 악보 분석, 영어 번역 등을 방법적 도구로 삼아 연구를 수행하였으며 본 논문의 핵심은 국내에는 잘 알려지지 않았던 테일러의 ‘프로그램 노 트’를 우리말로 번역하여 작품에 대한 이해도를 높여 많은 이들이 쉽게 거슈윈의 ‘파리 의 미국인’을 접하고 새로운 감각으로 감상할 수 있도록 하는 것이다. 그러한 가운데 특 별히 본 연구가 애니메이션과 같은 교육용 디지털 콘텐츠의 기초 자료로도 활용될 수 있기를 기대하며 사례 소개와 함께 취지를 설명하였다.
Education in Music by Way of Analyzing Program Notes for Classical Music : Based on “American in Paris”
“An American in Paris” (1928) is a symphonic poem composed by George Gershwin (1893-1937) based on his experience visiting Paris. The program note for the first concert was authored by his friend/music critic Deems Taylor (1885-1966), and the story(Narrative Guide) for the music was described in accordance with the progression of the music, making it easily accessible for the audience's understanding. This article aims to introduce this relatively unknown program note in a Korean language for a better appreciation of Gershwin's music. Also, in hopes of utilization for the educational digital contents, it contains educational explanations on the program note.
