- 브렉시트와 코로나19 시대의 구금과 봉쇄, 돌봄 그리고 연대 : 앨리 스미스(Ali Smith), 『여름(Summer)』(2020) -
『여름』(2020)은 앨리 스미스의 포스트 브렉시트 연작소설의 마지막 편이다. 이 작 품은 『봄』에 등장하는 이민자 추방 센터를 다시 다루었다. 『봄』이 이민자 추방 센터의 감시관까지 등장시켜 직접적으로 다루었다면 『여름』은 제1·2차 세계대전과 코로나라 는 역사적 상황을 전면에 부각시켜 이민자 추방 센터와 코로나 상황의 구금과 돌봄의 문제를 접근했다. 전쟁과 코로나는 사회적 불안을 극도로 높이고 인종적 민족주의를 강하게 추동하여 적성국가와 감염병 발병국가에 대한 혐오와 적대, 외국인 및 이민자 에 대한 거부감을 강화했으며 수용소 구금, 격리, 국경 봉쇄를 야기했다는 점에서 이민 자 추방 센터의 구금 및 이민자 돌봄의 문제와 좋은 대비가 된다. 특히 브렉시트 반대 입장의 작가는 『여름』에서 코로나에 대응하는 정치인의 국민에 대한 무관심과 무능력 그리고 브렉시트 찬성파의 정치인에 대한 맹신을 비판했다. 포스트 브렉시트와 코로나 시대에 이민자 추방 센터에 수감된 이민자뿐만 아니라 정부의 돌봄이 미치지 않는 약 자에 대한 관심과 돌봄의 연대가 요청된다. 정치 불신의 시대에 정치적 관심을 갖고 연 대를 실천하는 문학적 상상력은 가족이나 대안가족의 형태를 넘어 가족이 아니고도 약 자를 일시적이더라도 돌보고 환대해주는 세상을 지향하고 있다. 또한 『여름』은 등장인 물의 가족사를 매개로 전쟁의 역사가 보여주는 이민·난민의 역사와 다인종·다문화국가 로서의 영국의 정체성을 브렉시트 찬성파가 직시해야 한다는 것을 환기하고 있다. 그 런 점에서 『여름』은 정치적 관심에 기반한 실천적 연대의 정치를 강조하고 있다.
Detention, Containment, Care and Solidarity in the Era of Brexit and COVID-19: Ali Smith, Summer(2020)
Summer(2020) is the last of Ali Smith's Post-Brexit serial novel. This work again dealt with the immigration deportation center in Spring. If Spring directly dealt with the immigration deportation center's inspector, Summer approached the issue of detention and care of the immigration deportation center and the COVID-19 situation by highlighting the historical situation of the first and second World War and COVID-19. War and COVID-19 are in good contrast to the problems of detention and immigrant care at immigration centers in that two situations increased social anxiety, strengthened hatred and hostility toward hostile countries and infectious countries, foreigners and immigrants, and caused detention, isolation, and border closures. In particular, the Anti-Brexit writer criticized the indifference and incompetence of politicians responding to COVID-19 to the people and the blind faith in pro-Brexit politicians in Summer. In the Post-Brexit and COVID-19 era not only immigrants imprisoned in immigration deportation centers, but also solidarity of care and for the weak, who are not covered by the government's care, is required. In the era of political distrust, the literary imagination of practicing solidarity with political interest goes beyond the form of family or alternative families, even if it is not a family, it aims to be a world that cares for and welcomes the weak, even if it is temporary. In addition, Summer reminds pro-Brexit supporters that the history of immigration and refugees shown by the history of war and the identity of Britain as a multiracial and multicultural country should be faced through the characters' family history. In this regard, Summer emphasizes the politics of practical solidarity based on political interest.
